A Veteran's Story
Healing That Began Side by Side
"Kate" is a pseudonym. Certain identifying details have been changed or omitted out of respect for privacy.
At Robin's Nest Rescue, we often say that healing doesn't always happen in big, dramatic moments. Sometimes it happens quietly — through connection, trust, consistency, and the simple presence of an animal that asks nothing from you except to show up.
"Kate," a United States Marine Corps veteran, was referred to our Side by Side program by a local veterans organization. During her military service, she worked as a Military Police K9 Handler and Kennelmaster, developing a deep understanding of the bond between humans and animals through years of working alongside military working dogs.
After attending several Side by Side gatherings at the ranch, Kate shared reflections with us that perfectly captured the heart of our mission:
"There is an absolute connection between humans and animals. Connection builds with the forming of a relationship with the animal. As the relationship grows, trust and deeper connections form."
Drawing on her years of experience handling military working dogs, she spoke about the importance of trust, patience, and understanding:
"Without an established bond, some dogs would not work for a new handler. If a handler was not connecting with his/her dog, it was imperative for more bonding and socialization to happen."
She described how meaningful it was to witness the individualized care given to each rescued animal at Robin's Nest Rescue:
"Witnessing the different animals at Robin's Nest, it was very evident that they were each treated as unique individuals. Truly heartwarming to hear the stories of each critter that found a wonderful place to land at Robin's Nest."
Over time, Kate became more than a participant. She became part of the Robin's Nest Rescue family — returning for additional gatherings, volunteering, supporting events, and building relationships with fellow veterans, volunteers, and the animals themselves.
But perhaps the most meaningful moment came months later during a community event at the ranch.
With tears in her eyes, Kate quietly shared something deeply personal with our founder. Although she had retired from the Marine Corps nearly 30 years ago, she had recently made the decision to seek formal therapy for PTSD for the very first time.
For decades, she had carried the weight of her experiences on her own.
Then she told us something we will never forget: it was because of her experiences at Robin's Nest Rescue — the relationships she built, the sense of community she found, and the healing connection she experienced with the animals — that she finally felt ready to take that step.
In that moment, the impact of Side by Side became crystal clear. Healing doesn't always happen immediately. Sometimes it takes years. Sometimes it takes decades. And sometimes it begins with simply feeling safe enough to be seen, supported, and understood.
That moment is difficult to quantify in a spreadsheet or annual report. It will never appear as a statistic large enough to stand on its own. But for us, it represents exactly why Side by Side exists.
At Robin's Nest Rescue, impact is not only measured in numbers served. Sometimes impact looks like a veteran feeling safe enough to reconnect. Sometimes it looks like trust rebuilt through the quiet companionship of animals. Sometimes it looks like a person carrying invisible wounds for decades finally taking the first step toward healing.
Those stories matter deeply. And they remind us that healing often begins side by side.
